Year 9

Year 9 at Fairfield challenges pupils to explore big ideas, develop their talents and make connections across an increasingly ambitious curriculum. Building on their earlier learning, pupils deepen their understanding and prepare for the opportunities of Key Stage 4.

In English, Jane Eyre and Romeo and Juliet inspire exploration of love, conflict and society. History examines the world wars, the Holocaust and the discoveries that transformed medicine, while geography challenges perceptions of Africa and investigates climate change and natural hazards. Biology, chemistry and physics reveal the workings of cells, atoms and energy, while mathematics extends reasoning through algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

Creative opportunities range from expressive portraiture and theatre performance to composing film music. Pupils refine their practical skills through food, textiles and product design, while computer science explores Python programming, networks and artificial intelligence. Languages develop more confident communication about identity, relationships and the digital world, and PE builds tactical understanding, teamwork and performance.

Through religious studies and PSHE, pupils consider challenging questions about peace, medical ethics and human rights. Across the curriculum, reading, discussion and purposeful writing help pupils evaluate evidence, express informed opinions and become increasingly independent learners.
