Music
Context
Our overarching aim is to create a broad and balanced ambitious music curriculum where pupils are challenged to act, think and speak like a musician. We endeavour to develop a lifelong love and appreciation of Music, create the very best musicians and inspire pupils of all abilities to use Music as a creative outlet. We believe that music has the capacity to improve pupil’s employability skills as they develop skills in communication, negotiation, teamwork, motor skills resilience and problem solving.
Curriculum
Music lessons at Fairfield are based around four main musical disciplines; instrumental performance, composition, music technology and music’s role in culture and society. Pupils will explore all of these disciplines through a variety of musical styles, in line with the national curriculum. Music is taught mostly through practical music making workshops at KS3, but lessons also include music listening, appreciation and analysis.
Our curriculum goes beyond what is taught during lessons. We strive to adhere to the National Plan for Music and offer pupils an array of extracurricular musical activities. These include peripatetic lessons, choirs, bands and an opportunity to perform in various different performances throughout the school year. In Music we aim to instil a combination of declarative, procedural and disciplinary knowledge. Declarative knowledge includes understanding the definitions regarding musical terminology. Procedural knowledge includes understanding how to use performance and production skills creatively.
We want our pupils to:
- Understand how music is created using a variety of different methods.
- Learn how to play a variety of different instruments.
- Understand and use Music Theory
- Develop an understanding of different types of music including music from a range of different cultures, time periods and musical traditions; promoting an understanding of those people who have influenced the creation of music.
- Understand how musicians work in the industry.
- We want our Key Stage 4 pupils to develop the fundamental skills required for taking their first steps in the Music Industry – technical skills, ambition, resilience and underpinning theoretical knowledge.
- We want our Key Stage 4 pupils to experience real-world musical scenarios and understand the structure of the music industry.
- Develop a clear understanding of career pathways and progression within the wider music industry.
